Three members of law enforcement were killed and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in what appears to be premeditated gas explosion at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to enforce an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.

Investigation Developments

One male and one female were arrested at the site and one more individual who fled after the blast was apprehended not long after. Each of them have been admitted to the hospital.

The blast could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and footage from the scene revealed the structure reduced to a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, stated the property was under an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the property owners.

Mediators had been assigned to talk with the family members who had secured themselves into the home. When the police reached the location shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe one of the residents caused the explosion.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” local police chief Commander Papagno informed reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been ignited, and the blast directly hit our personnel,” he explained.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the residence, the minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the blast included an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

He believed the detonation had taken place on a floor above the entrance and informed the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the blast, he mentioned officers had “noticed a hissing sound, probably the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” local residents told local news, mentioning that the trio had previously threatened to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had died in the line of duty.
